Giving Tzedakah immediately prior to lighting Shabbat and Festival candles is the unique and cherished mitzvah of Jewish women going back millennia. Which is why it is so important to keep a Tzedakah box (pushka) next to where the candles are lit. While there are new, hi-tech ways to give Tzedakah, there is something special about doing it the old-fashioned way by inserting some coins or bills into a traditional Tzedakah box. It’s the way our mothers, grandmothers and great- grandmothers have always done Tzedakah.
