Tzedakah is one of the very first mitzvahs a child can learn, and do. Indeed, the great Lubavitcher Rabbi Menachem Mender Schneerson recommended that parents place a pushka (tzedakah box) near each child’s bed in order to remind them that there are poor people who need their help. What’s more, the presence of a pushka allow every child to share a little bit of their allowance money, birthday money or Chanukah Gelt with other children who are hungry for food.
