Maot Chitim: Pesach and Community - Elem

This lesson plan introduces elementary students to the concept of Maot Chitim, the Jewish tradition of collecting money to help those in need celebrate Passover.

Learning Objectives

  • The learner will be able to explain the concept of Maot Chittim and discuss its importance in Jewish tradition and communal responsibility through critical thinking and class discussion.

Materials Needed

  • Signs labeled: Definitely, Probably, Unsure, No Way (one for each corner of the room)
  • A list of statements related to Maot Chittim and helping others (see examples in the 4 corners activity)
  • A short story or explanation about Maot Chittim (sample story included below)
  • A notecards for each student to hand in their answer to the introduction question
  • Whiteboard or chart paper for recording student ideas
