On the day we are judged, we become more just. The relationship between being inscribed for a good year and our practice of tzedakah.
Judgment and Generosity
The Days of Awe begin with Rosh Hashana, when Jewish tradition teaches that all people are written in the Book of Life according to their deeds. We stand before the ultimate Judge, asking to be inscribed for a good year. And yet, embedded within this experience of being judged is a profound insight about judging others.
The Talmud teaches: "Whoever is merciful to others, Heaven is merciful to them" (Shabbat 151b). Rosh Hashana is not just about making ourselves right — it is about whether we have made space in our lives for others. Our judgment is shaped by how we have judged, treated, and given to others throughout the year.
